Jordi Torres has led proceedings in the opening free practice session at the Lausitzring having nipped ahead of Alex Lowes in the closing stages as the World Superbike grid gets back up to speed.
After its long summer break World Superbikes roared back into action at the German circuit, marking its return to the series calendar for the first time since 2007, with Torres heading the pack at the end of FP1 with a 1m 37.775s – less than a tenth ahead of Pata Yamaha's Lowes fresh from MotoGP action at Misano.
With the teams slowly building into the race weekend Leon Camier on the MV Agusta impressed early on with third on the timesheet ahead of Honda Racing pair Michael van der Mark and Nicky Hayden who enjoyed a two-day in-season test at the track over the summer.
Tom Sykes, who only tested a road-specification Kawasaki ZX-10R with his team at the German track, claimed sixth ahead of local rider Markus Reiterberger on his comeback from injury.
Chaz Davies led the Aruba.it Racing Ducati charge in eighth ahead of the returning Sylvain Guintoli, who is marking his first return to competitive action this weekend since his nasty crash at Imola in May, as championship leader Jonathan Rea rounded out the top ten.
