WSBK Lausitz, Germany: Sykes focuses on positives after wet slip off

Tom Sykes says despite crashing in the wet and losing ground in the World Superbike championship battle to Jonathan Rea he is looking at the plus points
Tom Sykes says despite crashing in the wet and losing ground in the World Superbike championship battle to Jonathan Rea he is looking at the plus points having retained his title contender status in Germany.

Sykes has endured the full highs and lows at the Lausitzring this weekend with second place in race one to close up to Rea but then slipped off during the opening lap in the wet race two to undo his good work.

Despite battling back up to 12th place in race two the Kawasaki rider has conceded an extra point in the championship deficit over the German round to his team-mate Rea and has admitted he hasn't been able to land on a consistent and fast setting in the wet on the new ZX-10R.

“I think it was probably a rider issue for my crash, as the bike set-up was not working well and I think I overstepped the mark in the first race,” Sykes said. “We need to find a small set-up improvement in the dry but much more in the wet. That is not so good in one respect but I also know I can win races in the wet.

"It is just finding the correct balance and feedback for the rider and at this moment I do not have it in those conditions. I am sure we can find it. In racing everything is possible and everything turns on its head so fast.

“Yesterday I was 26 points from the lead and today 47. The positive is that over the last three races the points gap is now at 47 but three races ago it was at 71. We still have three rounds remaining.”
