WSBK Magny-Cours, France: Sykes bemused by pace drop off

Tom Sykes says despite progress throughout the season time is running out on his World Superbike title hopes after losing more ground to Jonathan Rea at Magny-Cours.

After finishing ahead of his Kawasaki team-mate in race one, Sykes looked to secure a first win since Laguna Seca with lap record pace out front but lost the consistent times over the second half of the race to eventually fall behind Chaz Davies and Rea.

As a result, Sykes has conceded one extra point in the riders' standings to Rea with the championship deficit now standing at 48 points with two rounds remaining.

“When I started the race the bike felt really good and it was quite easy for me to manage 1m 37 second lap times. Unfortunately, for the first time all weekend, our pace dropped and I am confused about this. I then struggled to carry corner speed so that is something for us to look at. On Friday we were very fast and consistent but we had some issues in the second part of the race today.

“We were more consistent over the whole weekend this time, however, and we are making steps forward. Unfortunately it is quite late in the season now but at least we are able to fight at the front and be somewhere close for the race win.”

Yes, Sykes just blasts off right from the start and goes hell for leather hoping to get in front and create a gap which he hopes nobody can make up! You would think that this tactic would be re assessed now due to the number of times it backfires!
