Tom Sykes has smoked his World Superbike rivals for his eighth pole position of the season with an impressive four-tenths gap over closest challenger and title rival Jonathan Rea at Jerez.

The Kawasaki rider produced another flawless Superpole performance to storm to a 1m 39.190s lap to ease clear of the chasing pack. The lap became the fastest-ever Superbike lap at the Spanish track while it was over one second faster than his 2015 pole time from 12 months ago.

Rea gave Kawasaki the perfect qualifying to take second on the grid as the team's rivals were left scrambling for the remaining places behind the front two. Racing Ducati's Davide Giugliano shrugged off any injury concerns by taking the final place on the front row, albeit 0.787s off Sykes, to edge Pata Yamaha's Alex Lowes on to the second row by just 0.003s.

Lowes is joined on row two by Nicky Hayden on the Honda as FP3 timesheet topper Chaz Davies struggled to match his front-running rivals to fall down to sixth place on the grid.

Althea BMW's Jordi Torres, who had to progress through Superpole 1 after missing out on an automatic berth on Friday, found considerable gains to go seventh with an identical lap time to Davies but starts behind the Welsh rider after setting the lap after the Ducati rider.

Xavi Fores claimed eighth for Barni Ducati ahead of the second Pata Yamaha of Sylvain Guintoli and MV Agusta's Leon Camier, while Honda's Michael van der Mark slipped back to 11th after a hairy moment on his final flying lap.

Anthony West completed the top 12 having edged out Markus Reiterberger and Lorenzo Savadori in Superpole 1.
