Tom Sykes has topped the times at the official World Superbike test day at Aragon by edging factory Kawasaki team-mate Jonathan Rea, as Aruba.it Racing Ducati's Marco Melandri suffers an injury in a fall.
After Chaz Davies topped the morning times with a 1m 49.839s track conditions came to the World Superbike riders to further increase the outright lap pace in the afternoon which saw Sykes go fastest with a 1m 49.368s – just 0.049s off Davies pole position time from the preceding race weekend.
Rea, who ended the Aragon World Superbike round with a 50 point lead despite losing his 100% winning start to 2017 in race two, pushed his team-mate extremely close but finished the day second 0.020s off Sykes.
Davies also improved in the afternoon session but was two-tenths off the Kawasaki duo on single lap pace but his factory Ducati team-mate Melandri sat out the entire afternoon session after his early fall.
The Italian rider caused a brief red flag midway through the morning session when he tipped off at turn two and after being checked over in the medical centre he was diagnosed with a cervical sprain in his spin plus bruising.
Melandri left Aragon in a neck brace and will now face a race against time to be fit for the fourth round of the World Superbike championship at Assen on the 28-30 April.
Elsewhere, Michael van der Mark enjoyed a late blast of quick laps on the Pata Yamaha to jump to fourth on the times with a 1m 50.074s ahead of Milwaukee Aprilia's Eugene Laverty. Fellow factory Yamaha rider Alex Lowes had a premature end to the test with a fall inside the final hour but had already completed 58 laps at the Spanish track.
Red Bull Honda's Stefan Bradl was another to produce late gains to go seventh ahead of Althea BMW's Jordi Torres, who completed a staggering 103 laps, and team-mate Nicky Hayden with 69 laps to his name.
Still recovering from his fiery exit from race one at the weekend Xavi Fores completed the top ten contenders for Barni Ducati ahead of Melandri and IodaRacing Aprilia Leandro Mercado.
Leon Camier jumped to 13th overall on the MV Agusta with 73 laps completed ahead of Roman Ramos for Team Go Eleven Kawasaki and Randy Krummenacher for Puccetti Kawasaki.
Markus Reiterberger, Alex de Angelis, Ayrton Badovini and Jermey Guarnoni completed the timesheet of riders testing without challenging for outright quick lap times.
