WSBK Spain: Melandri: I’ll be fighting fit for Assen

Marco Melandri says he expects to be '100 percent' fit in time for the next round at Assen after leaving the Aragon test in a neck brace.
Marco Melandri says he expects to be '100 percent' fit in time for the next round of World Superbikes at Assen after leaving the Aragon test in a neck brace after a heavy fall.

The Italian rider had completed 27 laps on the morning of the official one-day World Superbike test which took place immediately after the Aragon round but his day was cut short by a fall at turn two in which he sustained a cervical sprain and bruising on his chest and neck.

Melandri says the neck brace was merely a precaution to avoid further injury on his trip home to Italy where he will be given another thorough medical examination in preparation for round four of the season at Assen on the 28-30 April.

“It's a pity to have ended the test ahead of schedule. I only did three runs, but despite the crash we collected some important feedback regarding the front,” Melandri said. “Unfortunately, I fell at turn 2, without warning, and after that I felt quite sore in the chest and throat.

“We already ran several checks at the medical center, and we'll do more once I'll be back in Italy, but everything seems OK. The doctors made me wear a neck brace just for safety.

“It should just be a muscle-related problem, so I expect to be up and running a week's time and 100 percent well ahead of Assen.”
