WorldSBK follows MotoGP in dropping penalty points

World Superbikes has copied the direction of MotoGP by dropping its penalty points system just a week after the Grand Prix Commission confirmed its change.

In a meeting of the Superbike Commission which included representatives of the key governing bodies (FIM, MSMA and Dorna) on the Saturday of the World Superbike Aragon round, it was confirmed the penalty points system would be scrapped with any ongoing penalty points dropped.

Referencing the same explanation as MotoGP, a statement confirmed: “Taking into consideration that the WorldSBK Race Direction have many penalty options, the penalty points are no longer necessary. The SBK penalty points are now withdrawn from the list of penalties.”

Another key change to sporting regulations sees riders whose best free practice lap time is outside the 107% lap time set by the fastest rider will not be allowed to take part in Superpole.

Riders will be allowed to participate in the following morning warm-up sessions and provided they set a lap time inside the 107% rule only then will they be granted permission to start the race at the back of the grid.

In addition, electric bicycles have been added to the list of banned vehicles, including scooters, for track familiarisation. Changes have also been made to clarify starting procedures.
