Jonathan Rea has followed up his race one win in Qatar by topping the short warm-up session ahead of the 2017 World Superbike championship finale.

The triple World Superbike champion secured his and Kawasaki’s maiden win at the Losail International Circuit to make it the most successful campaign of his career. Hunting his 16th race win of the year in the 2017 finale, Rea can make further history by taking the most points in a season record from Colin Edwards which stands at 552 set in 2002.

Rea topped warm-up by 0.315s from race one runner-up Chaz Davies who now holds a 10-point lead to defend against Tom Sykes to seal second place in the riders’ championship.

Michael van der Mark tipped off in race one after colliding with the rear tyre of Sykes in the opening stages recovered to take sixth place in the warm-up ahead of Milwaukee Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori and Althea BMW’s Jordi Torres.

Reverse grid race two pole-sitter Eugene Laverty ended the 15-minute session ninth quickest as Marco Melandri rounded out the top ten ahead of a resurgent Jake Gagne on the Red Bull Honda.
