Ruben Xaus fended off a race long challenge from an inspired Frankie Chili and James Toseland to scoop his first win of the 2003 World Superbike Championship in an exciting first 25-lap encounter at a steaming Misano circuit.
Xaus finished less than a second ahead of Toseland after Chili cruelly crashed out on the final lap, handing the final podium place to the closely following Regis Laconi.
Suzuki's Gregorio Lavilla came home to take fourth place after watching his teammate Vittorio Iannuzzo lead and then crash while Toseland's teammate Chris Walker
rounded out the top five.
Troy Corser finished a fighting seventh on the lone Foggy Petronas FP1 although runaway Championship leader Neil Hodgson
made an uncharacteristic mistake on lap two and crashed out while leading.
