Brit Byrne blasts to double at Brands

27 July 2003

Brit Shane Byrne showed the World Superbike field what it was all about today at Brands Hatch by taking the win in not only the first but both races today in round nine of the World Superbike championship.

Whilst the quality of the competition in the World Superbike arena may be criticised this year, the quality of the racing and of the British Superbike wildcard entries on show today was beyond reproach.

From the start it was the British Superbike riders ahead the field, with John Reynonds, fighting his way back to the front where he had been for the start of race one.

Reynolds kept the lead until Byrne, winner of race one, fought his way past on lap eleven and from then on it was Byrne's race. Reynolds kept him honest however, the blue Suzuki was a constant companion for Byrne right until the finish line.

Further down the field was a little more muted than the first race of the day. Ruben Xaus found his way into fourth place but was unable to muster a late charge, equally championship leader Neil Hodgson failed to cement his championship - after catching and challenging Xaus in the early laps the Brit dropped back significantly before closing back in with the Spaniard in the latter laps.

HM Plant Ducati rider James Toseland had a very fine race to be placed in third on the podium whilst team-mate Chris Walker was unlucky that his fine race was to end with a fall.
