Bayliss gets the double down under.

Reigning champ Troy Bayliss scored the double in Australia today and won the second of the Phillip Island World Superbike races.

In an impressive performance, coming hot off the back of his race one win, Bayliss powered his way into first place from the start. Not to disappear off into the distance however as pole-sitter Colin Edwards put up a defence and was soon to pass the Australian.

And so it continued with Edwards and Bayliss once more the two at the top of the field, with the Spaniard Ruben Xaus behind. It was looking like Colin Edwards was gong to battle for the lead right until the end, until the last few laps when Bayliss was able to power away and open up a gap that was to amount to two and a half seconds once more.

Ruben Xaus emulated his team-mate and scored the same result he did in the first race, with the lanky Spaniard scoring his second third place of the day.

There was more action down the field with a dramatic scrap for fourth place being fought by Hodgson, Bostrom, Haga and Izutsu. Kawasaki rider Hitoyau Izutsu was putting on the moves through the race and moving up the field after his start. It all proved to be I vain however as the rider lost it just six laps from the end.

Izutsu had just muscled his way back into fourth place and just lost the front end ending the race for the 31 year old Japanese rider.

Brit Neil Hodgson ended the battle for the fourth place by taking the spoils on his HM Plant Ducati. He led home Ben Bostrom's L&M Ducati and Noriyuki Haga's Aprilia, which managed to train its brakes for the entirety of the second race.

Two Brits and two Spaniards rounded up the top ten. James Toseland was seventh on his HM Plant Ducati in front of Gregorio Lavilla's Alstare Corona Suzuki. Chris Walker's Kawasaki came home ninth ahead of Juan Bautista Borja, who rounded off the top ten.

With another win for Bayliss he now has a perfect 100 points from the first four races of the season. A perfect start to the season and preparation for Soth Africa in a couple of week's time.
