Laconi takes race one as Chili gets double blow.

Italian Frankie Chili suffered a double blow at Monza today. Not only did his race bike have an engine blow in the warm-up lap, his spare bike's engine then did the same in the race. Regis Laconi was left to take an easy race win...

Chris Vermeulen managed to perfect his start for the Monza race and was off into an early lead. Behind him Laconi and Haga duelled, with Laconi winning through and then taking the lead early on in the race.

Once at the head of the field, Laconi could stretch out a lead, leaving the position swapping to those behind him.

A rear tyre smoking James Toseland made his way into second, and was unhindered after the threat of Noriyuki Haga evaporated in smoke, like so many Ducatis did today.

Benfitting from Haga's demise was Garry McCoy, who after a long battle with Vermeulen, got into third and was chasing down Toseland. Haga's team-mate, Leon Haslam, came home in fifth place ahead of a career-best for Sergio Feurtes who came from 19th on the grid to take sixth.

Results:
1. Regis Laconi
2. James Toseland
3. Garry McCoy
4. Chris Vermeulen
5. Leon Haslam
6. Sergio Fuertes
