Karl Muggeridge won the World Supersport race from Imola and was handed the title by van den Goorbergh when he crashed out of the race on lap 15.
Muggeridge took the title from the front, leading the race from start to finish with his Ten Kate Honda team-mate Broc Parkes hounding him for all but the last four laps of the race, where Muggeridge managed to pull a small lead.
Muggeridge's title marks Ten Kates third successive World Supersport crown, and earns Muggeridge his ride in the premier World Superbike championship aboard a Ten Kate Fireblade next season.
Yamaha Italia's Jurgen van den Gorbergh was languishing down in eighth position when he crashed out on the 15th lap. This gave Muggeridge an easy finish to his title.
Muggeridge and Parkes left third placed Sebastien Charpentier on the third lap to finish over nine seconds ahead by the end of the race.
Breil Ducati's Lorenzo Lanzi held off the injured Yamaha Italia rider Fabien Foret to finish fourth. Foret, suffering from a broken ankle amongst other injuries sustained at a horrific accident at Brands Hatch earlier this season, took fifth place off of his team-mate Andrew Pitt early on in the race when Pitt run wide at the final chicane taking to the grass. Pitt followed Foret across the line to finish sixth.
