Laconi takes race one despite Corser's challenges.

The Xerox Ducatis of Regis Laconi and James Toseland took first and third in the first Alstare Corona Extra World Superbike race at Silverstone with Corona Extra Rider Troy Corser in second place.

Yamaha Italia's Noriyuki Haga got a fantastic start and went straight into the lead however that was short lived as Corser muscled past him. He was then picked off by the two Ducatis and relegated to fourth place but disaster really struck on lap twenty five when he pulled out of the race. Speaking to Haga after the race he admitted that he 'finish petrol!', although his team later found out a faulty petrol pump was the problem.

His team-mate Andrew Pitt who crashed out in warm up was hit with a ride through penalty as his bike's engine did not cut out when it was on its side after the crash. After the ride through penalty Pitt rode hard to come home in thirteenth place.

Pole sitter and honorary Englishman Yukio Kagayama didn't get the best of starts but things went from bad to worse when he crashed out of sixth place on lap six. He fell at Woodcote but managed to rejoin the race in sixteenth place and finished the race in eleventh.

Chris Walker made one of his characteristic good starts and was in third place until Laconi, Toseland and Kagayama came by him. He didn't make life easy for them and fended them off for a few laps - he came home in sixth place.

Klaffi Honda team-mates Frankie Chili and Max Neukirchner both had top ten finishes with Frankie in fifth and Max in seventh. Max is carrying a hand injury from his crash at Valencia so a top ten finish was impressive.

The Petronas team were gutted when neither rider finished in race one. Gary McCoy was in twelfth when he crashed at Woodcote on lap eight. He tried to restart but he had caught his foot rest on the rumble strip and damaged it. Martin was in the points and heading for a 15th place finish however on the last lap he had a technical problem which meant he had to retire. The team say its not an engine concern but are still checking to find the problem.

Ben Bostrom retired on with a fractured rear sub frame. The team were very disappointed as he looked to have the potential to finish in the top ten.

Laconi's win was a first for him this season and a very emotional one for him. He started in fourth place and had to battle his way past the very determined Chris Walker.

Haga managed to hold off the Frenchman for ten laps and once into second he reeled in Corser and passed him on lap sixteen at Brooklands. On the last corner Corser tried to pass him but his bike spun up and didn't get the drive he needed to pass the Ducati.
