Laconi completes 'scorching' Misano double.

The second race of the sixth round of the Alstare Corona Extra World Superbikes got under way in sweltering conditions today at Misano – and the man who would come out on top was Ducati Xerox rider Regis Laconi, who claimed his first double of the season.

Second went to Chris Vermeulen on the Winston Ten Kate Honda and third place to championship leader Troy Corser on the Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki.

The second race was ran over 25 laps but, due to the searing heat, both Corser and Vermeulen had spoken to race control to try and get the race shortened to twenty laps. Race control would not be swayed and so the race ran over the full distance.

Corser took the lead off the line before Vermeulen immediately passed him. However, the #77 could get away and Corser remained in his wheel tracks for much of the early running.

Meanwhile, Karl Muggeridge, Vermeulen's team-mate, who has come down with a stomach bug, did his best to fend off the advancing Laconi before the Frenchman found a way past on lap three and started reeling in the leaders.

Laconi and Corser then battled for second place for a number of laps before Laconi succeeded in parking his Ducati in front of Corser's Suzuki. He then set his sights on Vermeulen, who he passed two laps later. The top three would remain near to each other for much of the remainder of the race, but no further passes were made.

Further down the field, the other Xerox Ducati of James Toseland was doing battle with Frankie Chili, the pair duking it out in style for fourth place. Toseland eventually got the better of the ever youthful Italian to keep fourth place for the second time today. However, Ben Bostrom on the Renegade Koji Honda was having a bad day when he crashed out on lap fifteen, he also fell during morning warm-up.

The Petronas team had a good weekend on one side of the garage and not so good on the other. Steve Martin brought the turquoise machine home in eighth place whilst his team-mate McCoy crashed heavily on lap nineteen. He was taken to the medical centre for a check up and has been given the ok.

Noriyuki Haga, the Samurai of slide, was back on form in race two and finished in a tyre smoking sixth place. There were large plumes of smoke from his rear tyre as he was sliding his bike around in the style that he has become famous for.
