Bayliss does the double at Valencia.
Troy Bayliss repeated his race one plan to take the win from Troy Corser at the third round of the Corona Extra Superbike World Championship at Valencia in Spain.
Both the Xerox Ducati rider and the Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki rider were a good 14secs clear of third place man Lorenzo Lanzi – race two panning out as a carbon copy of race one.
Bayliss admitted that Corser got him in the exact same place as in race one, “Troy passed me at the same place on the right hander, I got in better and was ready for him to have a go and he came pretty close. Many times I nearly touched his back tyre but I didn't want to crash and I didn't want to take anybody down. You either do it or you don't – no half moves.” Although it was a similar race to race one Bayliss found it hard work, “For the first third of the race Troy Corser was faster than me but at the end I could go faster than him due to tyres and the geometry of my bike. When he started to clear off it was disheartening, so I rode hard and put the laps in kept an eye on my lap board and put it together,” he admitted, “He is hard to beat here, he has had doubles in the past this time it is my turn.”
For Corser it was a false neutral that caught him out and he nearly went down, “I tried harder at the start and got away, then I got a false neutral at the hairpin and that allowed Troy Bayliss to catch me. The Pirelli tyres did good for twenty laps just not on the last three! There was a lot of slipping and sliding around out there, anyway congratulations to Troy and Lorenzo.” The last two rounds have seen Suzuki struggle with clutch concerns and Valencia was similar as Corser explained “We had no problems in race one but in race two I was pushing harder and worked the clutch so I had to adjust it. I really pushed the front at the end, I had to do it, but I can't really complain with two second places.”
The young Italian Lanzi brought his fan club along to Valencia and got he biggest round of applause of the day, he was delighted with his double podium saying, “Today I'm very happy for me and for Ducati. The tyre was too hard for the start of the race but was better for the finish.
PSG-1 Kawasaki team had a superb race two with their bikes taking up sixth, seventh, and eighth. Spanish rider Fonsi Nieto was first home just ahead of Chris Walker with Regis Laconi the final Kawasaki rider home.
James Toseland just missed out on a top ten finish after Michel Fabrizio piped him to tenth on the final lap. Ronald Ten Kate, Winston Ten Kate's team manager admitted that Valencia is a tough track for them and they just want to bag as many points as possible and move onto Monza in Italy in two weeks time.
Alex Barros had two difficult races not getting off the line well and having to battle from the low twenties up to fourteenth in race two and eleventh in race one.
Both Ruben Xaus and Yukio Kagayama were fallers during race two with Xaus' bike cart wheeling in spectacular fashion into the gravel. Both riders were able to walk away form their crashes although Kagayama did need some assistance after his off in free practice two.
