Eight in a row for Bayliss
Troy Bayliss romped over the line at Misano with a 6.943sec lead over James Toseland in second place, to take his eighth win in a row for Xerox Ducati at the sixth round of the Corona Extra Superbike World Championship, dedicating his win to a colleague who passed away earlier in the week.
Toseland started the race on pole and lead from lap one to ten on his Winston Ten Kate Honda, “I lead the race for ten laps and then Troy came past on the last chicane. He was getting more traction than me but I'm looking forward to race two,” concluded Toseland.
Third place went to Yuki Kagayama on the Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki after a fraught battle with his mate Haga. “It has been a long time since I have been on the podium, maybe six months. If the tyre worked better maybe I could win,” commented Kagayama.
When the lights went out it was Corser who initially took the lead from Pitt with Toseland in third, but that didn't last long as he barged his way to the front in one slick move. Haga was also on a charge and took third place from Corser, who was promptly mugged by Walker. So it was Toseland, Pitt, Haga, Walker, Corser and Bayliss.
Haga got under his team-mate to take second and Walker followed Haga's lead to take third place. Bayliss was also on the move and took his fellow country man, Corser. Pitt was shuffled back yet another place when Bayliss picked him off too, to move up to fourth place. Lap three saw Bayliss dispense with Walker putting himself into third place, Corser also made it past Walker to take fourth.
Bayliss was all over the back of Haga but he was struggling to get past, Haga fended him off for two full laps before Bayliss ran underneath him and Corser went around the outside. The top three were now Toseland from Bayliss with Corser running in third. Pitt and Michel Fabrizio got tangled up and crashed out, although Pitt was able to rejoin and finish sixteenth.
Further down the field Alex Barros on the bright yellow Klaffi Honda was on the move blasting past Regis Laconi. At the sharp end Bayliss was all over Toseland like a rash, he made his decisive move on lap ten and started to gap Toseland. Walker crashed out on lap ten whilst running in fifth, which was a shame as he had been on the pace well all weekend up until that point.
Kagayama was having a tough battle with his friend Haga and finally got by him on lap eleven to take fourth place. The front runners settled down for a few laps with everyone maintaining their positions. Corser who was in third place spiced up the race by crashing out on lap fifteen, the team suspect he missed a gear and had quite a high speed off, thankfully he was unhurt. Lap seventeen saw Steve Martin retire with an oil pressure concern, he had hoped for a good result from his front row start but that wasn't to be.
Barros was still on the move and passed Haga to take fifth place; one lap later and Haga took it back.
Bayliss got his head down and pulled an impressive lead by lap twenty he was 5secs clear of Toseland and continued to extend the gap to a maximum of 8.133secs. Lap twenty three saw Barros pass and hold off Haga for fourth place as the chequered flag came.
