@RonM What silly mistakes did he make in 2011? he crashed only ONCE in Salt Lake City. He missed 3 races because of injury, but he wasn't for a crash, he got injured by some object hitting his foot while he was riding. 2012 he had four crashes, 2 on the rain, still very unusual for him, mostly I think it was because of pressure, I think he felt he was his last year... and he really wanted this championship. The only crash he involved someone was Haslam in Moscow. So I wouldn't use the plural "others involved" Having said that, I agree retirement was the right choice cheers
