Kevin Curtain aboard his SSP Yamaha has put his disappointment from Qatar behind him and headed the first session at his home round of Phillip Island.
Curtain, like many riders at Qatar had tyre issues and had to nurse his machine home in second place instead of going all out for the win.
Lapping in 1min 35.337secs, Curtain lead for the bulk of the red flagged session with all of the top six under the lap record. He was pushed back to second place briefly by his team-mate and fellow Australian Broc Parkes, who ended the session in fourth.
Second fastest was defending World Champion Sebastien Charpentier on the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda. After crashing out of the race lead last weekend in Qatar, Charpentier needs to get his title defence back on track.
Fabien Foret who crashed out early in the session picked himself up and put his Kawasaki into third place overall. Kenan Sofuoglu
who is leading the Championship after his win in Qatar, was running in fifth place.
Britain's Craig Jones finished in seventeenth on his Reve Ekerold Honda.
The session was halted due to an oil spillage at turn nine. WSS free practice (1) results – Phillip Island:
