BMW announces it will withdraw its factory support from the World Superbike Championship at the end of the 2013 season.

Thats no big surprise. After all they pulled the plug on F1, MotoGP and now WSB. They are the worst manufacturer in terms of commitment. It seems they are no sooner 'in' than they are "out".

typical effing BMW really. Have they ever been in a championship for a meaningful amount of time. Go to F1, then quit. Go to WSBK, then quit. GO to Le mans, then quit. Go to DTm, then quit, and come back, probably quit again. Jeez how pathetic

So, wheres the news??

It was a given since the moment they entered the sport that they would give up, as soon as they reached race wins. It was a matter of time, really.

This is part of the bmw racing department strategy for a long time.


Either they are marketing strategy geniuses, or they are very stupid. Its too complicated for me to understand.

One thing is for sure... they are loosing fans everytime they do this.

Well this just stinks.
Chaz would've been better off staying with Park'n'Go for another year then atleast Aprilias customer bikes are race winners.
With SBK in its worst state in years in terms of available seats I really hope some new teams arrive otherwise I can see some guys getting a job outside of racing next year. Please Dorna actually get more "competitive" bikes on the grid and I emphasis the word competitive for a reason.

This is definately a blow the championship didn't need, now I think about good riddence somebody will snap up Marco so we will still get to see Manu inbetween the races (Marco's not so secret bargaining weapon).

To think they were criticising motogp and the motogp teams not to long ago I guess it always seems so simple looking in from the outside.

Wow Melandri has probably the worst luck of anyone with manafactures, Ducati in 08, Kawasaki withdrawl in 09, Yamaha withdrawl in 2011, BMW restructure this year, and now this...

Can't see him ever riding for Ducati again, after those stories too. Not a lot of options, for him to take another stab at the title next year. Could almost see him retiring after this.

Annoying as it is surely they need to concentrate on developing their brand elsewhere as manufacturers like Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki have by leaving varying championships. Otherwise eventually there wont be any motorcycle market left to make us any bikes to ride.

Racing is VERY expensive and sports bike models only account for a very small percentage of the global market, you've only got to look at the annoyingly growing amount of fully laden adventure bikes clogging up the daily commute in London to see this. Generally manufacturers use racing for advertising but it's plainly obvious that Ewan and Charley have done far more for their image than anything else for a fraction of the cost. Times have changed and for the industry to survive it has to aim at the developing markets which is the under 500cc market in other continents.

The sooner this championship becomes more production based to cut the extortionate costs the better, maybe then the official mfr teams will stick around.
