PJ Jacobsen: “The team is putting a lot of pressure on me to be top three in the Supersport championship”
After a fine qualifying performance, where he placed second on the grid in only his second World Supersport round, Crash.net spoke with PJ Jacobsen about his adaption to the class, working with Andrew Pitt and his expectations for Sunday's race.

Crash.net:
It seems like it has taken you no time at all to adapt to the Kawasaki ZX-6.

PJ Jacobsen
I learned a lot last year on the Superbike in BSB. I'm trying to bring that to me riding the 600 again. For sure the competition was tough last year and it's exactly the same again in this class.

Crash.net:
You tested at Aragon but it's a notoriously difficult track to learn. How have you found it?

PJ Jacobsen
For sure, there are a lot of blind spots. I had my first test here with the team back in November last year. But I'm learning it again, I've had to get used to it this weekend but it hasn't gone too bad at all. We ended up P2 in qualifying which is fantastic.

Crash.net:
That's a remarkable performance for only your second round in the series. Do you feel you're ahead of your current expectations?

PJ Jacobsen
For sure. The team's putting a lot of pressure on me to be top three in the championship this year. I mean those are high expectations. I tried to put it on pole, I had a little big of a get off in the last ten minutes but that's just me pushing and not knowing this place well. All these other riders have been here and done it.

Crash.net:
When the team puts pressure on you like that does that motivate you more? Does it help you to perform better?

PJ Jacobsen
Sometimes I look at my lap time and I think I'll settle for that. It's usually around fourth or fifth (fastest) and we were there for a while. They tell me I need to go faster and that's what I have to do, go back out and go faster again. You know you're working for them.

Crash.net:
You have Andrew Pitt working as your crew chief. How are you finding that?

PJ Jacobsen
I'm working for Andrew and he's putting pressure on me too. A two-time world champion. But he knows a lot about it. He's been there, he's won the world championship. Having him as a good crew chief on my side means he gets me everything I need and I know where I need to go.

Crash.net:
Phillip Island was looking really promising before you were forced out of the race with a mechanical. What happened there?

PJ Jacobsen
We just lost our first motor out of the six. It wasn't too great. Hopefully we'll have some better luck this weekend and for the rest of the season in terms of mechanicals. I think this and Sofuoglu's team really haven't had too many problems over the last couple of years and I'm hoping we get that sorted.”

Crash.net:
For today's race you have Coghlan, Cluzel and Sofuoglu all looking strong. How will you approach it?

PJ Jacobsen
Yeah, I'd say it's going to be a real battle. The key here is to get a hole-shot and basically check out. That's the only way to break them and I'll try to get on the podium that way. I'll try and lead that first lap, put my head down and ride smart. I'll try and do consistent 2min 02s or low 2min 03s and I think that'll get you up on the box.
