WSS: Lowes fastest on day one at Portimao

Sam Lowes out paces his more experienced World Supersport counterparts to claim the fastest time on the first of three days in Portugal.
Sam Lowes marked his full-time arrival on the World Supersport Championship scene as he claimed the fastest time at the end of the opening day of testing at Portimao.

The reigning British Supersport Champion is charged with keeping Parkalgar Honda as front runners in 2011 following the demise of double runner-up Eugene Laverty, the youngster getting his quest off to an outstanding start with a last gasp quick lap.

Edging beneath the 1min 46secs marker to be substantially faster than David Salom's fastest time from the morning session, though Lowes only topped the timesheets in the dying seconds of the 90-minute session, he had been inside the top three for the majority regardless.

Indeed, Salom's morning best of 1min 47.134secs was quickly demolished once the afternoon session got underway, with Fabien Foret taking the top spot in the opening minutes and holding it until just five minutes to go when he was usurped by Broc Parkes.

However, the Australian would once again be trumped by his team-mate Salom, only for him in turn to be edged out by Lowes as well. Unsurprisingly, each rider improved on their morning efforts, albeit some more than others, with Lowes's best coming after he slashed 3.5secs off his previous fastest.

Foret held onto fourth place, ahead of Chaz Davies on the once-again impressive ParkinGO Yamaha, while Gino Rea and James Ellison ensured all four British riders featured inside the top seven in sixth and seventh.

Luca Scassa, Florian Marino and Miguel Praia, who crashed towards the end of the session, rounded out the top ten positions.

For me Sam Lowes was one of the biggest question marks about how his speed would transfer to the world stage, and I know these are just testing times, but a first place in testing means there or there abouts at least. Sam has impressed me!

"...following the DEMISE of Eugene Laverty"?! WTF? Had I missed the news and there'd been another tragic Wilairot type accident in the off-season? Whoever wrote that needs to get a dictionary, or is confusing Eugene Laverty with the late lamented Craig Jones. Either way, it's poor journalism.
