Any fears that BE1 Racing would struggle to develop an initial affinity with the Yamaha YZF-R6 have been allayed after riders Chaz Davies and Luca Scassa proved instantly competitive during the World Supersport test at Portimao.
The Italian team's last minute switch from Triumph to Yamaha in the run up to the test certainly raised some eyebrows, not least because it left BE1 with minimal preparation time.
Furthermore, with the 2009 title-winning bike having not turned a wheel in more than a year, there were concerns BE1 – racing under the ParkinGO banner – would struggle for initial pace.
However, there would be no hint of bike 'rustiness' as Davies and Scassa lifted themselves into the top five from the very first session, while the latter would prove quickest overall in two of the wet sessions.
Ominously for its rivals, with Yamaha set to bring the bike up to date and the riders still gelling with the R6, Davues says there is more to come.
“I would have liked to have at my disposal three days of dry track, but the performed work was very useful anyway”, Davies, who finished fourth overall with Triumph in 2010, said. “I had the possibility to appreciate the characteristics of this bike, with which I felt at ease from the first laps.
“The R6 factory is easy and has a very powerful engine. I will have to make the best use of the Phillip Island test to find a better set up in order to be competitive from the first race”
Scassa was also impressed with the package, though he adds it took some time to get comfortable aboard the bike.
“I struggled a little finding the position on the bike, initially the footrests were too high and this didn't allowed me to do the best in day one of the tests. Once I found my position, I could focus on the setup. Although the bad weather conditions, we did a very good job, resulting among the fastest already from the first come-out.
“On the wet track I was also able to post the fastest time of the day, one more satisfaction. On the Phillip Island test I will still have a lot of work to do in order to be at the top even in dry conditions, in which I have to improve myself especially in what concerns the feeling with the bike.”
