WSS: Foret takes first provisional pole of 2011

The Frenchman was less than a tenth faster than David Salom, but well up on Sam Lowes in third place.
Fabien Foret kept his name at the top of the World Supersport timesheets to secure the first provisional pole position of the season at Phillip Island.

Foret coolly moved in front with just three minutes on the clock remaining, his lap of 1min 34.091secs enough to deny Kawasaki's David Salom the top spot.

This was despite Foret suffering a fall early on, one that prevented him from setting a representative lap time until the second-half of the 45-minute session.

However, while there was less than a tenth between the pair up front, Foret and Salom were able to establish a seven tenth margin back to third place man Sam Lowes, who is continuing to show well on the Parkalgar Honda.

Meanwhile, Yamaha were big improvers between the sessions with Chaz Davies, Roberto Tamburini and Luca Scassa following in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, the trio just over a second off Foret's benchmark effort.

Having shadowed Foret in practice, Broc Parkes ended his first day on home soil in a modest seventh position, just up on Honda contingent Florian Marino, Robbin Harms and Gino Rea, the latter also suffering a fall during the session..

Just behind, James Ellison ended his first day with PTR Bogdanka in a provisional 11th position.

"although the field is much stronger than it was last year in my view, more depth" More depth sure, I concur. But much stronger ?!? You must be kidding. Lascorz, Laverty and Sofuoglu would be one two three again (in no particular order) and smoke these guys had they not moved on.
