Chaz Davies admits he is 'quite down' after technical problems left him five laps short of wrapping up the 2011 World Supersport Championship at Imola.
The Welshman needed a mere third place finish, regardless of his rivals' results, to seal the crown with two events in hand, but while he had done everything right by taking the lead from the first corner and establishing a massive lead over the chasing pack, the ParkinGO Yamaha cried enough just a short distance from the finish.
Compounding his awful luck around the Italian circuit, after a mechanical problem on the final lap denied him what would have been a maiden victory on the Triumph twelve months ago, Davies was frustrated to see his margin slashed by race winner Fabien Foret through no fault of his own.
“At this moment I am quite down. I dreamt of winning the Championship here, at a track where two years ago I did my debut with ParkinGO Team. Instead something has happened that I wasn't expecting.
“Now I don't want to lose concentration, I have another chance next week in Magny Cours where I hope to be beat the misfortune."
Despite the problems, Davies is still 35 points ahead of Foret in the standings, meaning he needs just a top five finish at Magny-Cours to ensure the title goes his way.
