Roccoli takes unexpected provisional pole

Roccoli takes pole position as he looks to secure his spot in the forthcoming factory-backed Lorenzini Kawasaki team.
Massimo Roccoli extended his impressive pace from first free practice to claim provisional pole position for the penultimate round of the 2011 World Supersport Championship at Magny-Cours.

The Italian, who has scored three top five finishes for the privateer Lorenzini Kawasaki this year, was once again the only rider to break 1min 42secs as he lapped the French circuit in a fine 1min 41.498secs, more than half a second faster than his closest rival.

Proving to be a strong circuit for the Kawasaki ZX-6R, factory riders Broc Parkes and David Salom followed up in second and third positions, with Luca Scassa rounding out the provisional front row on his ParkinGO Yamaha.

Beyond those at the front, most eyes are on the battle for the title, with Chaz Davies needing just a sixth place finish to seal the crown in France. However, he could only manage eighth fastest after suffering a technical issue on his Yamaha, while his main rival Fabien Foret was fifth best, with Sam Lowes and Florian Marino between them.

Elsewhere, Gino Rea is a provisional tenth on the grid after losing time with a crash, just ahead of James Ellison in 11th position. Martin Jessopp, meanwhile, just scraped in with a lap inside the 107 per cent cut off by qualifying a provisional 29th.
