Davies: From chance debut to title glory
3 October 2011
Chaz Davies has lauded Giuliano Rovelli's ParkinGO team after sealing the 2011 World Supersport Championship title, just two years after the team helped transform his motorcycling career by giving him his debut in the series.
Davies made his first appearance in the World Supersport Championship at Imola after being snapped up as the replacement for the out-of-favour Gianluca Nannelli, the Welshman causing a stir by finishing fourth on the little fancied Triumph Daytona 675.
Prior to that, Davies had focused on GP racing and a stint in the United States, but a full WSS season with the team followed in 2010, Davies finishing on the podium another four times aboard a bike that couldn't match its Honda and Kawasaki rivals.
Extending his deal for 2011, though Davies had anticipated continuing on the three-cylinder Triumph, a last-minute switch to the Yamahas that won the 2009 WSS title would prove the turning point for him.
Instantly competitive on the machines, despite their age, though Davies's season started badly when a puncture scuppered victory hopes in Australia, he would break his duck during round three at Assen, before following it up with further wins at Monza, Aragon, Silverstone and the Nurburgring.
Though an engine blow denied him an almost certain win – and early title – at Imola, Davies made no mistake at Magny-Cours, concentrating on the sixth place he needed to secure the crown with one race remaining.
The culmination of the hard work he has put in over the years, Davies paid particular praise to the ParkinGO team for giving him the chance that has led him to today.
“I have worked for this during 15 years. It's an incredible day. I am world champion even though I still have to think about it twice to believe it. Giuliano Rovelli offered me a chance and I have been able to pay him back, making our dream come true. We have won thanks to the work of the whole team that gave always 110 per cent.
“I would like to thank Luca Scassa, he has been a great teammate. Today he has protected me for the most of the race risking not the victory. It has been an incredible season that will remain in my mind forever…”
A first title for ParkinGO (BE1 Racing), which itself only made its WSS debut in 2008, Giuliano Rovelli paid tribute to Davies.
“In 2007 Lucio Nicastro and me started to work, in a test at Cartagena and the tools on the floor, we had nothing more, but we are now world champions! Thanks to all the team, Yamaha, my workers at ParkinGO and Oasi Handling working hard at home, allowing my company to have a great success!
“With the right mentality, professionalism, step by step and having the feet on the floor you can get everything! Thanks to Luca Scassa for another amazing victory!! And now Chaz Davies… the rider that most deserves this championship title, a golden boy and a great friend, the World Champion!"
ParkinGO has been tipped to move up to the World Superbike Championship in 2012, with Rovelli stating his desire to continue working with Davies.
