Salom sets early Portimao pace

14 October 2011

David Salom got the final round of the 2011 World Supersport Championship underway by setting the fastest lap time in first free practice at Portimao.

The Spaniard, who is fourth in the WSS standings despite having not won a race this season, dominated the session by topping the standings early on and gradually lowering his best lap to 1min 45.979secs.

Though Luca Scassa briefly interrupted Salom's progress with ten minutes remaining, the Kawasaki rider was two tenths up on second place man Chaz Davies, the Welshman arriving at the 2011 finale this weekend having been crowned World Supersport Champion at Magny-Cours.

Scassa ended up in third place, ahead of Lorenzini Kawasaki's Massimo Roccoli, while Broc Parkes and Fabien Foret, who along with Salom are disputing the runners-up spot this weekend, were fifth and sixth.

Competing on his team's home soil, Sam Lowes was seventh fastest, ahead of PTR stablemate James Ellison, while Russian rider Vladimir Leonov was an impressive ninth best on the Yakhnich Yamaha ahead of the team's full-time debut.
