Salom on provisional pole at Portimao

David Salom takes provisional pole position at Portimao as he takes a small step on the way to a potential first World Supersport win.
David Salom has taken provisional pole position for the 12th and final round of the 2011 World Supersport Championship at Portimao.

Carrying his form from first free practice, though Salom actually lapped slower than the time that had him on top in FP1, his effort of 1min 46.195secs was still good enough to hold his place at the head of the timesheets.

Even so, ParkinGO Yamaha's Luca Scassa ran him close, just 0.006secs behind the Kawasaki rider, while Sam Lowes and Chaz Davies rounded out the provisional front row, the former showing a marked improvement over his FP1 lap time.

Frenchman Florian Marino headed up Ten Kate Honda's challenge in fifth position, ahead of Broc Parkes on the second Provec Kawasaki ZX-6R, while Gino Rea on the Step Racing Honda and Fabien Foret followed in seventh and eighth.

Behind them, local favourite Miguel Praia was a fine ninth and James Ellison on the sister PTR Bogdanka bike.
