Salom peaks with WSS runners-up spot

Having struggled to make an impression in the World Supersport class initially, David Salom arrives with a run to second in the 2011 series.
David Salom has thanked his Provec Motocard.com Kawasaki team after prevailing in a four-way fight for second position in the 2011 World Supersport Championship standings.

The Spaniard's run to second position at the season-ending Portimao race was enough for him to overtake both Fabien Foret and Broc Parkes to finish behind only Chaz Davies in the final 2011 standings.

His impressive season represents a dramatic upturn in form since he made his WSS debut in 2007, the 27-year-old failing to crack the top twenty overall in two years of Supersport racing. An ensuing season in the 2009 World Superbike class with Pedercini Kawasaki yielded a handful of points, prompting a return to the 600 class.

Nonetheless, his deal to ride with ParkinGO Triumph transformed his career, Salom missing the podium but going on to finish in sixth position overall.

From here, Salom joined the Provec Motocard.com Kawasaki team and showed his pace by taking pole position at the season opener. Cracking his podium duck at Motorland Aragon and qualifying on pole position a total of three times in 2011, though Salom failed to win a race all year, he finished every race inside the top eight, consistency that earned him the runners-up spot.

“I was given the opportunity to finish second and I took it and I am very happy this weekend. I took pole and second in the race was a great result. I am happy because it is my birthday and I took second place in the race and also in the championship.

“I have to thank the team and Kawasaki for this year. This is my best season of racing and a lot of it is because of the bike I rode and the team I rode for.”

@ ELGuevo just remember where Salom was previously before he joined Kawasaki. Even on Honda he coudn't improve. The ZX-6R bikes r not slower to the R6s if not faster. He should have thanked Kawasaki for making his career and he did it. great. ZX-6R rocks. I would like him to be on ZX-6R again.
