Sheridan Morais is on provisional pole position for the second round of the 2012 World Supersport Championship after dominating Q1 at Imola.
The South African, who finished sixth on his debut with the Kawasaki DeltaFin team in Australia, showed his hand with a run to second fastest in opening free practice but would proceed to go one better in Q1 by topping the timesheets.
At one time commanding a nine tenths advantage over the competition, though Sam Lowes got the gap down to just under a tenth by the end of the session, it wasn't enough to unseat the South African.
WSS veterans Broc Parkes and Fabien Foret make up the remainder of the provisional front row, while local rider Roberto Tamburini continues his trajectory towards the front of the field on the Lorini Honda in fifth position.
Phillip Island standout Jules Cluzel emerged sixth best on the PTR Honda, ahead of Vladimir Leonov on the best of the Yamaha contingent, while Ronan Quarmby shrugged off a crash to finish eighth quickest.
Rounding out the top ten, Imre Toth and Vittorio Iannuzzo assumed positions nine and ten, while series leader and Morais's team-mate Kenan Sofuoglu could only manage 13th quickest as the strain from his knee injury appeared to take its toll.
