Lanzi lands in WSS for Assen

Lorenzo Lanzi will compete in the World Supersport Championship for the first time in eight years after agreeing terms with the Czech-based ProRace Honda team.
Three-time World Superbike race winner Lorenzo Lanzi is to make a return to the international motorcycling stage at Assen, albeit in the World Supersport class after penning a one-race deal with ProRace Honda.

A veteran of 130 WSBK race starts, the Italian briefly appeared in the series last year when he started six races in place of James Toseland at BMW Italia, while his last podium came as recently as 2010 when he took the DFX Ducati to second place at Imola.

Having been unable to land a full-time ride in World Superbikes this year, Lanzi will instead return to the World Supersport series, taking the place of Lukas Pesek at series newcomers ProRace Honda, the former Moto2 rider having decided to quit the Czech-based team after two rounds.

Set to mark his first WSS start since 2004 when he raced for Breil Ducati, Lanzi is looking forward to getting back to international competition, even if he admits he will need to adapt his riding style to the CBR600RR having forged much of his career on Ducati twins.

"I am delighted to begin this new adventure with ProRace," he said. "I have known them for a few years and they offered me the ride. World Supersport is very competitive and it won't be easy to stay with the guys at the front, but I've been training hard during the winter and I am in perfect shape".

"It'll be strange for me to race a Honda in World Supersport. My only experience in this championship, of which I have great memories, was on a Ducati, so my riding style is set up for this type of bike".

Lanzi's deal is for the Assen race only, though a strong performance could lead to a full-time ride for the remainder of the season.
