Sam Lowes has gotten his home World Supersport Championship event underway in perfect style by topping the timesheets in first free practice at Silverstone.
A session that began damp but would begin to dry during the closing stages, Lowes was positioned towards the front throughout and would eventually go clear with a best time of 2mins 09.811secs, more than half a second faster than PTR stablemate Ronan Quarmby.
A strong result for Quarmby, particularly after hurting himself in an accident that would stop the previous race at Brno, the South African contributed to a Honda 1-2-3-4-5, with Broc Parkes, Jules Cluzel and Mathew Scholtz locking out the top five for the Japanese manufacturer.
Championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu led the Kawasaki charge in sixth position, 1.6secs behind Lowes, while Hungarian Team Toth duo Balazs Nemeth and Imre Toth followed up in seventh and eighth.
Brno race winner Fabien Foret began his weekend with the ninth quickest time, while Vladimir Leonov rounded out the top ten aboard the Yakhnich Yamaha.
Elsewhere, Florian Marino's second event on the new MSD RN India Kawasaki began with a solid 15th, while team-mate Dan Linfoot – making his debut this weekend – kicked off his home event in 23rd position. Wild-card rider Kenny Noyes, meanwhile, was 26th best on the WK Hampshire Suzuki GSX-R600.
