Sylvain Barrier has put himself in a good position to claim pole position for the penultimate round of the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Championship at Portimao after dominating Q1.

Currently six points in arrears of Eddi La Marra in the overall standings, Barrier was well clear of his key rival in Q1 by setting a best lap of 1min 46.700secs, more than eight tenths better than the Barni Ducati-riding Italian.

Indeed, Barrier was comfortably faster than each of his rivals, ending the session four tenths up on Bryan Staring, who in turn had Kawasaki counterparts Jeremy Guarnoni and Christoffer Bergman for company in third and fourth.

Behind La Marra in fifth position, Matthieu Lussiana furthered Kawasaki's cause in sixth, ahead of sole Honda rider Fabio Massei, wild-card Santiago Barragan, Lorenzo Savadori and Leandro Mercado.
