Broc Parkes will attempt to win his first World Supersport Championship race of the season at Portimao from pole position after just doing enough to edge out Fabien Foret, Jules Cluzel and Sam Lowes in Q2.
The experienced Australian has endured a difficult year with the multiple championship winning Ten Kate Honda team having finished no higher than third so far, but has a good chance to rectify that in Portugal after topping final qualifying.
Setting his best lap with just under ten minutes of the session remaining, Parkes's effort was less than a tenth faster than Foret, Cluzel and Lowes, who will start alongside him on the front row in second, third and fourth respectively.
Sheridan Morais had the honour of out-qualifying his Lorenzini Kawasaki team-mate Kenan Sofuoglu in fifth, while Vladimir Leonov made the biggest gains between the Q1 and Q2 sessions to go sixth best, despite ending his day in the turn five gravel trap.
Needing just a fourth place finish to seal the 2012 title one round early, Sofuoglu has given himself a small task to achieve his objective after only managing seventh on the grid.
Behind him, Florian Marino gave MSD RN Kawasaki its first top ten start in eighth place, while Massimo Roccoli and Alex Baldolini rounded out the top ten on their respective PATA by Martini Yamaha and Suriano Triumph machines.
