Jeremy Guarnoni and Sylvain Barrier gave local fans something to smile about as the final round of the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Championship kicked off at Magny-Cours, the French pair locking out the top two positions in FP1.
Much like the sister Superbike class, the final event of the season doubles up as the title decider with Barrier and Eddi La Marra split by just three points, while Bryan Staring is also mathematically capable of winning the title 22 points adrift.
It was local favourite Barrier that got the better start to the weekend, however, the BMW Italia rider falling short of countryman Guarnoni around a circuit that began fairly damp but would slowly dry. Barni Ducati's La Marra and Pedercini Kawasaki rider Staring, meanwhile, were fifth and eighth quickest respectively.
Behind Guarnoni and Barrier, Fabio Massei was third fastest on the Ten Kate Jnr Honda, ahead of former WSBK rider Leandro Mercado.
Making the trip to France after sealing the South African Superbike Championship for the third time, Greg Gildenhuys was an impressive sixth fastest on the second of the BMW Italia machines having even briefly topped the timesheets. His rival for that South African title, Nicolaas Grobler, is also participating this weekend aboard a third Pedercini Kawasaki – he was 13th fastest.
Elsewhere, Lorenzo Savadori was seventh best, ahead of Staring, while Christoffer Bergman and another Frenchman Randy Pagaud rounded out the top ten.
