Gabor Talmacsi and Balazs Nemeth will be absent for the opening round of the 2013 World Supersport Championship after suffering injuries in accidents on the first day of action at Phillip Island.

The pair were amongst several Supersport riders to crash over the course of the day, Talmacsi receiving concussion in his fall during FP1, while Nemeth would fracture his collarbone in a fall during the latter stages of Q2.

The outcome is of particular disappointment for Talmacsi, who was expected to pose a podium challenge this weekend after ending pre-season testing in sixth position earlier in the week aboard the Prorace Honda.

Countryman Nemeth, meanwhile, will undergo surgery on his broken collarbone in the hope of being back on the Complus SMS Honda in time for the second event of the season, which takes place at Motorland Aragon in April.

Elsewhere, Intermoto Kawasaki could also be faced with having no riders on the grid after both Luca Scassa and David Salom injured themselves in FP1.

Salom skipped Q2 after a hospital visit, though he was back out on track for a handful of laps during FP2 as he evaluates his fitness ahead of race day. By contrast, Scassa was able to return to action as soon as Q1, but his injured wrist would keep him sidelined for FP2. The Italian - a WSS race winner at Phillip Island in 2011 - is currently deciding whether he will continue to ride this weekend.
