Kenan Sofuoglu has kicked off the second round of the 2013 World Supersport Championship at Motorland Aragon by setting an impressive opening marker in first free practice.
The Mahi Kawasaki rider, winner of the opening round at Phillip Island almost two months ago, languished outside the top ten for the opening half of the session before progressing to second behind Michael van der Mark with 20 minutes remaining.
The Turk would then go on to slip well below 2mins 03secs in the final minutes with a lap of 2mins 02.787secs to establish a comfortable advantage over his rivals. Heading up that challenge was young rookie van der Mark, the Pata Honda rider improving late on to also break into the 2mins 02secs bracket.
Though seven tenths adrift of his Kawasaki counterpart, Kev Coghlan was an impressive third fastest on the DMC Lorenzini machine, the Briton making the most of his intimate knowledge of the Alcaniz circuit having raced on the Spanish domestic scene.
He headed up countryman Sam Lowes on the Yakhnich Yamaha, with Vladmimir Ivanov completing a successful session for the Italian-Russian DMC Lorenzini squad by rounding out the top five.
Behind them, a late improvement would see Fabien Foret lift his Mahi Kawasaki up to sixth place, just edging out Ricardo Russo, the young Italian making an impression on his belated debut this weekend with the Puccetti Kawasaki having been forced to miss the Phillip Island opener.
Returning from injury, Gabor Talmacsi was eighth fastest, ahead of Vladimir Leonov and Sheridan Morais, the South African – who scored his maiden WSS podium at Aragon last year – getting a much-needed untroubled session aboard the PTR Honda under his belt.
Just outside the top ten, meanwhile, Florian Marino was a fine 11th quickest, the Frenchman returning to WSS action this weekend after being called up to replace the injured David Salom on the Intermoto PonyExpress Kawasaki ZX-6R.
