Sam Lowes has marked his intentions for the coming weekend by breaking the Motorland Aragon World Supersport lap record on the way to provisional pole position in Q1.

The British rider, who was quick in testing at the circuit last week, had maintained a fairly quiet presence during FP1 on the way to fourth fastest, but was considerably faster out of the blocks when Q1 got underway.

Immediately going fastest with a time of 2mins 02.645, the Yakhnich Yamaha rider would eventually work that down to a final time of 2mins 01.930secs – the first official lap by a Supersport rider to break the 2mins 02secs marker.

Though four tenths adrift, Sheridan Morais and PTR Honda have many reasons to be pleased with the second fastest time, the South African rider seemingly over the persistent technical woes that prevented him from performing to his ability at the Phillip Island opener.

His time of 2mins 02.393secs was fast enough for him to out-pace Honda counterpart Michael van der Mark on the sister Pata-backed machine, while FP1 pace setter Kenan Sofuoglu led a train of Kawasakis that stretched back to eighth place in the order of Luca Scassa, Kev Coghlan, Vladimir Ivanov and Fabien Foret.

Lowes's team-mate Vladimir Leonov was once again inside the top ten in ninth place, with Florian Marino continuing to impress on his return to WSS competition in tenth on the Intermoto Kawasaki.

Elsewhere, having starred on its debut in Australia, ParkinGO MV Agusta are finding things tougher in Spain, with Roberto Rolfo its top representative in 19th place, while rookie team-mate Christian Iddon was 26th fastest. Irishman Jack Kennedy, meanwhile, was 14th quickest on the RivaMoto Honda.

Four crashes blighted the session with Nacho Calero Perez suffering his second fall of the day from the PTR Honda, along with Gabor Talmacsi, Mathew Scholtz and Ricardo Russo.
