Sam Lowes has taken another half second off his own World Supersport lap record at Motorland Aragon following another dominant performance in second free practice.
Having already become the first WSS rider to officially break 2mins 02secs on the way to provisional pole position in Q1, Lowes proceeded to improve the benchmark again to a remarkable time of 2mins 01.425secs – half a second faster than his previous best.
With the Yakhnich Yamaha rider echoing his sublime practice pace from the opening round at Phillip Island two months ago, Kenan Sofuoglu – who would go on to beat him to victory come race day in Australia – ended FP2 almost six tenths down on his main rival with final qualifying to come this afternoon.
Pata Honda rookie Michael van der Mark maintained his strong start to the weekend in third, the Dutchman finding a familiar face just behind him on the timesheets in the form of Riccardo Russo, the Supersport debutant – who finished runner-up to van der Mark in the Superstock 600 class last year – making his presence felt on the Puccetti Kawasaki in an excellent fourth.
Refusing to budge from the top five, Kev Coghlan was fifth quickest, ahead of Kawasaki counterpart Luca Scassa on the Intermoto-prepared ZX-6R, with Sheridan Morais, Raffaele de Rosa, Vladimir Leonov and Gabor Talmacsi making up the remainder of the top ten.
Elsewhere, there were good gains for Roberto Rolfo on the ParkinGO MV Agusta, the Italian veteran up to 12th fastest, ahead of a seemingly struggling Fabien Foret, while Irishman Jack Kennedy was 21st quickest and Christian Iddon 26th.
