Niccolo Canepa became the first rider other than Sylvain Barrier to top an FIM Superstock 1000 timesheet in 2013 after pacing the way in a wet Q1 session at Assen.
The Italian, who finished second to the dominant Barrier in the opening round at Motorland Aragon, conquered the poor conditions to emerge almost a second quicker than Barni Ducati team-mate Eddi La Marra.
Indeed, it was a disappointing session for BMW GoldBet rider Barrier, who after being two seconds up on the competition in FP1, crashed on his final Q1 lap, denying him an improvement to lift him higher than 11th position.
Jeremy Guarnoni rounded out the top three on his MRS Kawasaki, ahead of Ondrej Jezek on his SK Energy Ducati 1199 Panigale and Marco Bussolotti's Trasimeno BMW.
Kawasakis completed the top ten in the order of Christoffer Bergman, Matthieu Lussiana, Lorenzo Savadori, Alessandro Andreozzi and Romain Lanusse, the quintet all ahead of Barrier.
