Sam Lowes waited until his final lap to leapfrog to the top of the World Supersport timesheets at Monza, the Yakhnich Yamaha rider going fastest in second free practice.

The Briton, who won last time out at Assen, left it late to produce his best, his time of 1min 48.002secs coming despite giving away 13km/h to key rival and second place man Kenan Sofuoglu around the high-speed Italian circuit.

Indeed, of the 33 riders on circuit, Lowes's classified top speed of 278km/h was faster than just three other riders in the entire field, making his session-topping time all the more notable.

Behind Lowes, Mahi Kawasaki pair Sofuoglu and Fabien Foret completed the top three, ahead of Italian trio Lorenzo Zanetti, Riccardo Russo and Stefano Cruciani, the latter impressing on his wild-card outing aboard the Puccetti Kawasaki to slot in behind his team-mate.

Florian Marino was seventh quickest, heading off title contender Michael van der Mark in eighth, Raffaele de Rosa in ninth and Vladimir Leonov in tenth.

Ahead of final qualifying, provisional pole sitter Kev Coghlan was 12th quickest this time, while Andrea Antonelli and Sheridan Morais - currently second and fourth respectively - were 15th and 14th best.
