Despite keeping his track time to a minimum throughout the day, Sam Lowes needed just four laps to stamp his mark on proceedings during provisional World Supersport qualifying at a damp Donington Park.
The championship leader, who recorded his maiden WSS win at Donington last season, didn't set a time in the morning and waited until the final ten minutes to venture onto circuit, but would immediately go quickest nonetheless.
With lap times some 13secs down on the lap record and weather expected to improve over the remainder of the weekend, though provisional pole is unlikely to mean anything tomorrow, Lowes's ability to get straight up to speed is an ominous sign for his rivals.
With conditions improving in the closing stages, Kenan Sofuoglu was second fastest on the Mahi Kawasaki, while Mathew Scholtz showed impressively on the rapidly improving Suriano Suzuki to go third fastest.
Having topped much of the session, Gabor Talmacsi eventually slipped to fourth on the Pro Race Honda, ahead of local favourites Jack Kennedy, Christian Iddon and Kev Coghlan. Raffaele de Rosa, Andrea Antonelli and Alex Baldolini rounded out the top ten.
