Sam Lowes has broken the World Supersport lap record at Donington Park during second free practice despite losing time with a fall early in the session.
Scene of his maiden WSS success last year, Lowes's scintillating single lap pace aboard the Yakhnich Yamaha around his home circuit was in evidence from the off as he established a comfortable margin between himself and his rivals.
Even when Lowes suffered a low speed fall at the Melbourne hairpin, his name would remain top of the timesheets until he returned and pumped in a lap of 1min 30.903secs, just underneath former team-mate Jules Cluzel's previous best.
Behind him, key rival Kenan Sofuoglu was four tenths adrift in second position, with former British Supersport front runner Jack Kennedy running him impressively close in third place aboard the RivaMoto Honda.
Luca Scassa and Sheridan Morais completed the top five on their respective Kawasaki and Honda machines, ahead of Roberto Rolfo in sixth, the Italian and his ParkinGO MV Agusta team-mate Christian Iddon sandwiching Lorenzo Zanetti in seventh.
Elsewhere, wild-card riders Glen Richards, Billy McConnell and Sam Hornsey ended the session a respectable 12th, 15th and 22nd, while Kev Coghlan was 15th fastest on his DMC Lorenzini Kawasaki.
