Portimao: Miguel Praia returns for home round
5 June 2013
Miguel Praia will make a popular return to World Supersport action in front of his home fans at Portimao this weekend.
The Portuguese, a full-time WSS rider from 2006-2011, now races in Brazil, but has agreed terms for a one-off outing with the Lorini Honda team.
"It is a great joy to be able to compete in Portugal and especially in Portimao, in the same Supersport World Championship I've contested for six years,” said 35-year-old Praia.
“Negotiations were closed some days ago and now I have to quickly get ready for this participation, since the CBR600RR that I'll be using is very different from CBR1000RR I'm currently competing on.
“Last time I rode the 600cc Honda was in Portimao last year, so I just have to readjust to the bike.”
Praia finished 17th at Portimao last season, riding a Ten Kate Racing Products Honda. The 35-year-old also contested the 2012 Nurburgring and Magny-Cours rounds for Bogdanka Honda PTR, finishing 16th and 22nd respectively.
Aware of the high standards in WSS, Praia is keeping his expectations in check, but his first world championship points since 2011 would be a realistic goal.
"The Supersport World Championship is very competitive series and full of very fast riders. Clearly I'll try and get a good result, I won't be on the track to lose, but since I haven't been racing in this class since the end of 2011 I'm not expecting any miracle.
“The team wants to put at my disposal the best package and I want to give a joy to all Portuguese who will be in the stands. There'll be no result before the chequered flag, only commitment and dedication.”
Raffaele de Rosa is the Lorini team's full time rider.
