Sam Lowes has laid down a convincing gauntlet for his World Supersport Championship rivals to aim for after securing provisional pole position at Portimao by a clear half second.

The Briton, who is bidding for a fourth consecutive WSS race win in Portugal this weekend, moved clear 20 minutes into the Q1 session before lowering his time to 1min 45.724secs, a comfortable half second up on key rival Kenan Sofuoglu in second place.

Behind Sofuoglu, Jack Kennedy continued his fine form at Portimao aboard the RivaMoto Honda to snare a provisional front row spot in third, while David Salom was an impressive fourth quickest on his return to action after a long spell out with injury.

The Spaniard headed up a trio of Kawasaki riders with Fabien Foret and Luca Scassa chasing in fifth and sixth, while Sheridan Morais got the better of Honda counterpart Michael van der Mark in seventh and eighth positions.

Behind them, GoEleven Kawasaki's Andrea Antonelli and Suriano Suzuki's Mathew Scholtz completed the top ten, just edging out Kev Coghlan in 11th. His counterpart Christian Iddon would provisionally qualify in 23rd.
