van der Mark makes impressive return to the front

Dutch rookie Michael van der Mark, still recovering from injury, makes an impressive recovery to play part in epic last lap Portimao World Supersport encounter
20-year old rookie Michael van der Mark produced a fantastic ride to finish just off the podium in the fierce four-way battle at the front of round six of the World Supersport championship at Portimão.

The Pata Honda mounted rider took everyone by surprise with his speed during his first three races in the World Supersport class, which resulted in two podium finishes.

However a first corner crash at Monza broke four bones in his left foot and the Dutchman has gradually been recovering since.

After qualifying sixth in Portugal he made a fine start and gradually made his way past Jack Kennedy and Sheridan Morais to assume fourth place. There were still, however, three seconds to the group in front and with ten laps remaining he set about bridging the gap to fight with Lowes, Foret and Sofuoglu in the hectic final two laps.

Speaking to Crash.net after the race van der Mark was jubilant to have finished within one and a half seconds of the race winner, his closest time to the front in only his sixth race in the class.

“If you see that you have the chance to get a podium you maybe can be a little disappointed. But after the two races we had that were so bad we have to be happy with today.

“It's the first time this year that we fought for the win. I'm thankful to the team because the last few races were so difficult and we finally had a full, dry weekend and we made a big improvement so we're happy.”

He was as high as second place with a lap and a half remaining and looked to have taken Sofuoglu for the final podium position at turn one, but a small mistake under braking at turn three cost him the position.

Even so, he didn't look out of his depth battling the top three in the championship, riders that have twenty full years of experience in this class between them.
