Sam Lowes continues to hold firm at the top of the World Supersport Championship timesheets at Imola, getting close to his new lap record during second free practice.
The Yakhnich Yamaha rider, who comes into the weekend commanding a 39 point lead in the overall standings, lapped the Italian circuit in 1min 51.244secs, just a tenth down on the lap record he set in Q1 on Friday.
Even so, Lowes was run relatively close by his nearest rivals, with home hope Riccardo Russo and Kenan Sofuoglu a respectable three tenths adrift on their respective Puccetti and Mahi Kawasakis.
Lowes's team-mate Vladimir Leonov was one to make big gains overnight to leap up to fourth on the timesheets, ahead of DMC Lorenzini Kawasaki duo Kev Coghlan and Vladimir Ivanov.
Sheridan Morais led the PTR Honda charge in seventh position, ahead of local riders Luca Scassa and Andrea Antonelli, with Jack Kennedy rounding out the top ten ahead of Pata Honda riders Lorenzo Zanetti and Michael van der Mark.
An eventful session for some riders, with Lowes, Kennedy, Christian Iddon Eduard Blokhin, Mitchell Carr and David Linortner all taking off-track excursions, the session was also stopped for a lengthy period to clear a spill from Alex Schacht's expiring Toth Honda.
