Russia WSS: Sofuoglu on pole as Q1 times stand

Sam Lowes goes quickest in Q2 but slower lap times overall mean Kenan Sofuoglu will start the Russian World Supersport race from pole position.

Kenan Sofuoglu will start on a World Supersport pole position for only the second time this season after his fastest lap time in Q1 at the Moscow Raceway proved enough to rebuff any improvements in Q2.

With cooler temperatures and rain in the air always poised to keep the order static in Q2, riders would indeed struggle to get close to their Friday benchmarks, ensuring the order of Q1 would make up the final grid.

As such, Sofuoglu starts from pole position aboard the Mahi Kawasaki, though he faces competition from both Yakhnich Yamaha riders on the front row with series leader Sam Lowes in second position and local hero Vladimir Leonov in third place.

The inclement conditions would also have the effect of helping Andrea Antonelli and Alex Baldolini to their best qualifying performances of the season, the latter particularly impressing on the relatively unfancied Suriano Suzuki GSX-R600.

Michael van der Mark heads up Honda's challenge in sixth place, with Jack Kennedy well placed in seventh ahead of RivaMoto's home event, while fading title contender Fabien Foret gets underway from eighth.

Having set the pace in the damp FP2 session, Roberto Rolfo will start ninth on the ParkinGO MV Agusta, ahead of Kev Coghlan, Massimo Roccoli and Raffaele de Rosa.

Despite a technical issue late on, the session itself was topped by Lowes, ahead of Kennedy, Fabio Menghi and Roberto Tamburini, though the British rider was still sixth tenths off his best lap.
