Kenan Sofuoglu has opened up the penultimate round of the 2013 World Supersport Championship by setting the fastest time in a damp first free practice session at Magny-Cours.
With a slippery track keeping lap times between 13-15secs shy of the dry lap record, Sofuoglu would emerge on top with an effort of 1min 53.649secs to set the pace by almost 1.5secs from Sam Lowes, who merely needs a top 15 finish this weekend to be crowned champion.
With the order changing to the chequered flag, Michael van der Mark improved to third position late on, with Christian Iddon making it four different manufacturers inside the top four aboard the ParkinGO MV Agusta.
His most convincing performance since joining the Go Eleven Kawasaki team, Sheridan Morais was fifth fastest, ahead of Lorenzo Zanetti and Balazs Nemeth, while Jack Kennedy, Raffaele de Rosa and Kev Coghlan rounded out the top ten.
Elsewhere, newcomer Lee Johnston was the quickest of the PTR Honda quintet on his first outing in 12th position, though team-mate Danny Webb was consistently inside the top ten before crashing in the closing stages and dropping to 19th.
